Press Release/Statement

ARTIST STATEMENT

For Balancing Echoes: Heart & Helix:

“I began stripping and bending branches into forms while mourning my mother’s death in 1993. I allowed these pieces to weather, dry, crack, shrink, mold and finally fall apart. I found an interest in natural inherent processes and materials in a landscape structure.”

“With this installation, I have transformed and distorted the natural elements in size, shape, color and combinations to form a different reality. Although the branches, seedpods, tree logs I use are recognizable as such, this installation is meant to suggest a lyrical line, a body part and a landscape.”

“My work continues to evolve. I am altering the branches more- adding brighter colors- looking for emotional content in the materials I use while striving to retain some of their unique characteristics. Ultimately, I am addressing both physical and emotional transformation and opposing natural phenomenon such as wind, stillness, shadow, and light. Underlying it all is a sense of the transitory nature of life.”
